In 1998, Adrian and Lisa Shepherd decided they wanted to start a family. Lisa underwent in vitro fertilization, since she suffers from fertility issues. Lisa had 24 eggs obtained from her and 14 of those eggs were sucessfully fertilized.
Two of the fertilized eggs were implanted in Lisa, and she gave birth to the first two of the triplets, Megan and Bethany, in 1999. Adrian and Lisa talked about having another child last year, so doctors implanted a third fertilized embryo into Lisa.
Ryleigh was born in November 2010, 11 years after her sisters and weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces. This is the longest age gap between siblings conceived during the same fertility treatment. Lisa said Ryleigh looks like her sisters.
